Soccer Nova Scotia Announces Launch of South West Soccer League for 2026
Halifax, NS – March 2026
Soccer Nova Scotia (SNS), in collaboration with clubs across the province’s southwest region, is proud to announce the launch of the South West Soccer League (SWSL), set to begin in the 2026 Summer season.
This new pilot league represents an important step forward in expanding access to structured, community-based soccer in rural Nova Scotia. The SWSL will initially serve U13 boys and girls, with plans to expand to additional age groups and grassroots programming in future seasons.
The league is being developed in partnership with Southwest BLAST FC, Yarmouth FC, and Argyle Minor Soccer, with participation from Clare currently being explored.
Building the Game Locally
The South West Soccer League has been designed to address a key challenge for players and families in the region: access to consistent, developmentally appropriate competition without the burden of extensive travel.
By creating a locally-based league structure, the SWSL will:
- provide regular, meaningful competition opportunities
- reduce travel time and costs for families
- support player retention and enjoyment of the game
- strengthen the capacity and sustainability of local clubs
“This is about building the game where players live,” said Lindsay MacAskill, Executive Director of Soccer Nova Scotia. “We know that access and travel are real barriers in rural communities. The South West Soccer League is a practical, collaborative solution that puts players first while supporting clubs and communities.”
Local club leaders are already seeing the impact this will have across the region.
“This is exactly what our region has needed,” said Jody Dyer, Southwest BLAST FC. “It creates opportunities for our players to compete, develop, and stay connected to the game in their own communities. It also strengthens our clubs and gives us a clear path forward as a region, and gives us a chance to be represented at Provincials.”
“This is an exciting milestone for our club and our community,” said Gerry Burgess, President, Yarmouth Clippers FC. “For the first time, we are building a sustainable pathway that keeps our players closer to home while still competing at a high level. This is the foundation for long-term growth and success in our region.”
For Argyle SC, the league represents both development and retention within their community.
“This league allows our players to stay within our community while competing at a higher level, right here at home,” said Michel Boudreau, President, Argyle Minor Soccer Club. “It provides a clear pathway to provincials and is key to both player development and retention, particularly for our female athletes, where creating an all-girls division gives them the environment to grow, compete, and excel.”
A Collaborative and Structured Approach
The league has been developed through close collaboration between participating clubs and Soccer Nova Scotia, with a shared commitment to building a model that is:
- structured and sustainable
- aligned with provincial standards
- responsive to local needs
In its first year, Soccer Nova Scotia will support league operations, administration, and development to ensure a strong and successful launch.
More Than a League
The SWSL is part of a broader vision to strengthen soccer infrastructure in the southwest region. The league will serve as a foundation for the future creation of a formal South West Soccer structure, providing clubs with a stronger voice in governance and long-term development.
“This is more than just a new league,” MacAskill added. “It’s about creating a sustainable regional system that will benefit players, coaches, referees, and clubs for years to come.”
Looking Ahead to Summer 2026
The inaugural SWSL season is scheduled to run from June through August 2026, with teams having the opportunity to qualify for and compete in the Soccer Nova Scotia Provincial Championships, August 21–23.
Pre-season activities will include coaching education opportunities, a league meeting, and a regional kick-off event to bring the soccer community together ahead of the league’s first season.
